RYE, N.H. -- It is not the largest house in the neighborhood or the most imposing. It does not even have a water view, unlike the lofty mansions to the east that rise above the rocky coastline.
But enough people have sought out the stone and stucco house and the man inside, ''The Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown, that a small army of workers this week began building a security fence to keep out intruders.
In a town where miles of knee-high, lichen-covered stone walls mark property lines, Brown and his wife are erecting a 6-foot stone and iron fence.
''How would you like to have someone looking in your window," asked Bill Schleyer, a neighbor who plays golf with Brown.
''It's a pretty powerful piece of work he did," Schleyer said, referring to the book. ''It sparked the imagination of millions and millions of people."
Forbes magazine has ranked Brown the sixth-best paid celebrity in the world, earning $76.5 million in the year ending in June 2005. ''The Da Vinci Code" has sold some 50 million copies in more than 30 languages, and the movie version starring Tom Hanks opens next month.
